How to Become a Digital Nomad With No Experience

So you want to work remotely and travel the world but just don’t know where to start. You’re not sure you have the right online skills or which career path to follow.

It can be daunting starting out but don’t worry, there are some jobs that require NO experience and little to no prior education.

You might be looking into this for one of three reasons:

  • You have a job right now that doesn’t allow you to work online
  • You want to switch careers
  • You’re looking for a side hustle to bring in some extra cash

Here are some jobs you can get into fast and start your digital nomad lifestyle.

1. Virtual Assistant

A virtual assistant is the online form of a personal assistant or PA. There is a huge demand right now for virtual assistants as more and more solopreneurs are popping up around the world who are in desperate need of administrative assistance and organizational support.

So if you’re someone who enjoys helping others achieve their goals, are detailed, efficient, organized, and quite tech-savvy, this could be the career path for you.

Some more advanced VA’s will have marketing, design or writing skills but it’s really up to the client and what they need, so find that out and determine whether you can fill the requirements.

If you’re looking for VA jobs, definitely join Facebook groups centred around entrepreneurship. Make sure you have a CV with recommendations or even create your own website with a portfolio to direct prospective clients to.

VA’s generally make between $10-$40 per hour.

2. Online English Teacher

If you’re a native English speaker and you have a laptop with good WIFI, this can be an easy job to get into. You will need to obtain a TEFL certificate in order to qualify. If you don’t have a degree, it is preferable to do a 120 TEFL course which can be completed in 3 weeks done full-time.

Average income of an online english teacher is $10-$40 per hour.

3. Freelance writer

If you love writing and you have a blog of your own, why not try and get on some clients of your own? Writing blog articles for small business can be a fast and easy way to make money and become a serious profession. All you need is a blog or portfolio of work that you have done and you’re on your way.

Freelance writing pay varies but it can range between $30-$70 for a 500 word article.

4. Translator

Do you know more than one language? Awesome! Well then you will be able to become a translator. In spite of all the translation out there, there’s still a high demand for people who can provide concise, clear, accurate translations.

You may need to start off with short translation work and build up a portfolio but you can become a full-time remote translator after 6 months to a year if you provide quality work.

Before jumping into this, do some research to see if the language combinations you know are in high demand and go from there.

There are sites like Proz and Translatorcafe where they have job boards and forums where you can find potential clients.

Average salary for a translator per hour is $30

5. Proofreader

If grammar is your game and you get super annoyed when seeing spelling errors, being a proofreader could be for you.

Proofreaders read through documents and make sure there are no spelling, grammatical and typographical errors. As a proofreader, you might find yourself proofreading an entire book one week and then a series of blog posts the next.

The amount someone makes varies as it depends on quality of work and time but on average for 15,000-35,000 words the pay is between $100-$500.

Bear in mind experience will benefit you here and having advanced speaking and writing skills in the language written would be necessary.
